Murphy’s Story

Below is the story about how Murphy the Bernedoodle came to grace Sommerset with his presence!

It was a chilly December evening in 2022 when Murphy the Bernedoodle first arrived at his forever home. He was a surprise for his entire family.  Murphy was a fluffy bundle of joy with a soft black and white coat. He had big, warm eyes that seemed to say, “I’m ready for anything.” His new family couldn’t have been more thrilled to welcome him into their home, and from the very first moment they met, it was clear that Murphy was a special dog.

At twelve weeks old, Murphy was already full of energy and curiosity. He spent his days exploring every corner of the house and yard, with a particular fondness for digging holes in the backyard, much to the family’s amusement (and occasional dismay). But what really makes Murphy stand out is his love for tricks. Whether it is waving, begging, giving a high-five, or his infamous “whisper” trick, where he tilts his head and makes a soft, breathy sound that seems like a secret between him and the person he is talking to, Murphy has a natural knack for making everyone smile.

Murphy is inseparable from Brooklyn and London, the two teenagers of the house. Together, the trio form a tight-knit bond, with Murphy’s playful antics and loyalty adding a special dynamic to their daily lives. One of his favorite things to do is play with his older brother, Copper, a German Shepherd. The two often play tug-of-war, chase, or even have a playful wrestling match. Copper, a calm and wise dog, helps guide Murphy and show him the ropes of life. The pair regularly snuggle up together, resting after an afternoon of adventures.

As Murphy continued to grow, it became clear that his temperament was perfect for more than just play. His sweet and gentle nature made him an ideal candidate for therapy work. At just a year old, Murphy’s family made the decision to have him become a hospice therapy dog. With his calm presence, the ability to listen attentively, and his natural ability to make people smile, Murphy began visiting patients in nursing homes and assisted living communities.

Weighing in at just over 100 lbs, Murphy is a true gentle giant with a heart of gold. His warm and affectionate nature allows him to effortlessly connect with everyone he encounters, spreading joy and love to all who cross his path.

Murphy’s family is incredibly proud of the work he is doing.  After a long day of work, he loves nothing more than to hang his head out of the car window, feeling the wind rush through his fur. At home, Murphy’s family cherish their quiet moments together—whether it was curled up on the couch, playing in the backyard, or just spending time with the people who love him.
